The Garden
You would think that living on the farm building a farm would be great and it would produce so much fruit and vegetables. That's what I thought last year. I thought I would just till the soil and before I knew it I would have an abundance of vegetables. I was wrong. I don't know if it was that I planted late in the season or if it was the depleted soil but last year NOTHING grew.
I was so excited when we found out that we would be moving during the summer. Finally I could have a garden again. I bought my seeds and plants, I made a plan, I was ready. Or so I thought. Walking to the spot where the garden would be it was overgrown with weeds. Dandelions and crab grass covered the soil. No worries, I just need to till it up and it will be amazing things will go smoothly then. NO! The tiller pooped out and decided not to work. UGH! We borrowed a tiller and got to work. Two hours later I have made 1 pass through the whole garden. Who knew a tiller could go so slow. Grabbed my kids and the racks to get all the weeds out. They threw in the towel about 1 hour into the endeavor. More tilling, more racking, soon the garden is ready to go.
By this time it was late in the season and I needed to get things into the garden. When I say it looked like a blind person planted my rows I am not kidding things were scattered everywhere. After getting my plants into the ground there was a big space still left. What to do, what to do? My great idea was to sprinkle wildflower seeds in the open area. Quick tip, DO NOT DO THIS!!! The wind picked up and brought the seeds everywhere in the garden. Soon not only did I have weeds growing up again everywhere but now there were wildflowers. It got so bad at one point that I broke out the lawn mower to tame this garden.
So at the end of the season we had a handful of cucumbers and a few baskets of tomatoes. This was a lesson learning year. Plan better, start earlier, and tackle those weeds! So to all the beginner gardeners I see you. We got this. Now for round two!
