Moving In
It was almost a year ago that we made the biggest change in our lives. We left our large neighborhood house and moved our family to a small farm house. We always said that the land meant more to us then the house. That became more true as we walked through the door of the farm house that has been in my husband's family for generations. Walking through the door the first thing we noticed was the musty smell. A little air freshener and it will be ok. Right?! Yeah it took a little more elbow grease then just some air freshener. Now I will be honest I have never liked cleaning. I am more of a shove it in the drawer and make things look good kinda girl. You know the kind. Basically my house is a hot mess until I hear someone is coming over and start flinging things across the room to make things look clean. So here I stand in a kitchen with not appliances, a sink that doesn't work, very little countertop and cabinet space, and a rollercoaster floor.
What was a girl to do? I got down on that floor and started scrubbing. Even broke out the steam cleaner to feel a little better about how it looked. A fresh coat of paint on the cabinets, wall paper for a backsplash, and more wallpaper to make the counter top better. Slowly, slowly it started to come together. We added a few shelves and island to give a little prep space. Throw in a refrigerator and oven and we finally had a working kitchen.
Everyone guts and rebuilds the only bathroom in a house right before moving in, right? Yeah some people may think it was a little crazy but I am so happy we did. One of the best things of remodeling an old house is finding the history of the house and you take down walls and move things around. Our first find...the layers of linoleum in the kitchen giving it the rollercoaster effect. Ok I'm going to be honest here all other updates to this point have basically been just a band aid. I literally put wall paper up to hold the walls together. Paint over the water stains, carpet on the old wooden floor, and paint. Lots and lots of paint.
So here I sit day dreaming about the amazing house we will have hoping and praying to make it happen soon. To do that I need to make changes. I need to leave the city mentality behind and think like a homesteader. Can I use what we have, can I make something new from something old? How can I save money. I am hoping that my journey will inspire others and help them to take the steps they need. Make the changes that better you families life and not just the momentary gratification of a purchase. Join my journey and see what we can accomplish.
